1964 classic Welson vibrato

With its semi-circular shape the new vibrato assembly looks roughly like the previous version but the internal mechanism is completely different. The arm is now attached Jazzmaster style, between bridge and string ends.

The device was built by the same unknown hardware maker who supplied all non-Eko tremoloes in Castelfidardo in the 60’s, but the design was Welson proprietary. Welson will still be mounting a barely modified version of it on its SG copies of the early 70’s.

La sagoma semi-circolare del vibrato è simile a quella della versione precedente ma il meccanismo interno è totalmente diverso, con la leva ormai articolata al modo della Jazzmaster, fra il ponte e l’estremità delle corde.

Il dispositivo era prodotto dallo stesso sconosciuto fornitore di hardware che faceva tutti i vibrato di Castelfidardo (eccetto che per Eko ) negli anni 60, ma la concezione è specifica di Welson. Sarà ancora usata senza modifiche sostanziali per le Welson tipo SG dei primi anni 70.

Another red Welson. White pickguard tend to become dominant at the end of the series but that is not systematic. When pickguard is white, switches and thumwheels are black. And vice versa.

Un’altra Welson rossa. Il battipenna bianco tende a diventare dominante verso la fine della serie ma senza sistematicità. Quando il battipenna è bianco, i controlli sono neri. E vice-versa.

Like new, all original and wonderful. There is a minor evolution in the control area: the selector switches, previously rectangular, are now replaced with rounded end pushbuttons with oval printings inside. Those appeared approximately at the time Welson began to introduce bolt-on necks, without absolute simultaneity though. The new controls are combined here with a glued-in neck but in the next generation the old pushbuttons will still be used sometimes.

Hagström sparkle guitars, for some reason, never were coated in green. Consequently Eko ’s plagiarists also refrained from using this colour. Then Crucianelli truthfully copied Eko and also ignored green. In the end Welson had to come to break the taboo.

Come nuova, tutta originale, meravigliosa. C’è una piccola evoluzione nella pulsantiera: i bottoni rettangolari finora usati hanno lasciato posto a pulsanti arrotondati con stampa nell’incavo ovale. La loro apparizione è più o meno contemporanea della transizione al manico incollato ma senza simultaneità assoluta. I nuovi controlli qui sono associati con un manico incollato, ma nella seguente generazione si vedono ancora ogni tanto i vecchi pulsanti.

Le Hagström a brillantini, non si sa perché, non sono mai esistite in verde. Da buona plagiarista, la Eko si astenne dall’usare questo colore che venne ignorato anche da Crucianelli, copiando fedelmente Eko. Alla fine ci volle Welson per rompere il tabù.
