Eko 100/200/300 hollow-bodies
THE CONCEPT OF ACOUSTIC GUITAR WITH F-HOLES, SMALL AND CHEAP WAS DEAR TO THE GERMAN PRODUCERS AND A HABIT IN SICILY. THE 100 MODEL WAS ONE OF THE MOST LONG-LASTING MODELS OF THE WHOLE RANGE.
The Eko 100 was produced in the acoustic or in the electric version, with one or two pick-ups. When Eko stopped giving numeric names, this guitar took three different names each for a different type of finish. Mascot, the cheap two-tone burst (Medallion in USA). Commander, the redburst; Escort, the natural. No binding or covered headstock destined to the next model up, the 200.
The 200 serie was an evolution of the finish of the 100 and little more but signifies Pigini’s intention to occupy that section of the market of the arch-top thin-line adored by Höfner and the Club range. Vox too put on the market the Tornado model with original headstock though we also find it with the Eko logo. These guitars were produced with a wide range of options and they all seem original. All the pick-up models were mounted on the pick guard.
The small arch top shape could not survive with a toy neck and the short scale. The Tramp/Typhoon is an example of how to make a guitar become an obsolete project. The dimensions of the body prevented it from being a comfortable and ergonomic guitar.
Il concetto di chitarra acustica con le buche ad effe piccola ed economica era caro ai produttori tedeschi e consuetudine in Sicilia. Non sappiamo se anche la serie 100 fu costruita nei primi anni dai fratelli Paladino che producevano le prime acustiche per Eko.
Il modello 200 era una evoluzione delle rifiniture della 100 o poco più, ma segnala l’intenzione di Pigini di occupare quella fascia di mercato delle arch-top thin-line amatissima da Höfner con la sua serie Club. Anche Vox commercializzò il modello come Tornado, con una paletta originale che abbiamo visto anche usata da Eko.
Queste chitarre furono prodotte con una grande quantità di variazioni e tutte sembrano essere originali. Dal 64/65 fu la Melody a produrre questa serie.
La forma di piccola arch-top non poteva sopravvivere con un manico giocattolo e la scala corta. La Tramp/Typhoon è un esempio di come far diventare una vera chitarra un progetto ormai datato. Le dimensioni del corpo ne facevano una chitarra comoda ed ergonomica .
